MINIMAL TILLAGE
Years of continual tillage and poor soil management have rendered much of our suitable production land in this country greatly damaged and nutrient-deficient soils grow nutrient-deficient foods. Aiming to preserve the structure of our soil by tilling only when necessary and using shallow cultivation practices we promote a living soil that intrinsically contains all of the nutrients needed for healthy plants. These practices paired with keeping the soil covered and utilizing cover cropping are how we grow nutrient-dense food without the use of pesticides and fertilizers.
MIMICKING ECOSYSTEMS
In nature, diverse habitats are comprised of many different of soil, plant and animal species that play their own unique roles in perpetuating the system as a whole. Trees provide shelter from wind and sun. Animals fertilize and lower pest pressure. Vegetables provide an abundance for human and beneficial species alike. We strive to replicate this in our growing practices by cultivating diverse crop varieties, adding soil amendments and mulching when needed, and stacking functions in our growing areas with trees, perennials, rotationally-grazing animals, and annual vegetables. All of this extra work increases our total yields and provides the absolute highest quality products grown in healthy soil!
